Vanilla Frets on Fire 1.3.110 (2008) is the original game. FoFiX is a fork of the earlier 1.2.451 build that kept growing after vanilla development stopped. They play the same core game — hit notes in time on a scrolling fretboard — but FoFiX is the richer, more flexible program, and vanilla is the purist, simpler one.
What FoFiX adds
- Custom themes that mimic Guitar Hero and Rock Band presentation, plus animated menus and scalable graphics.
- Local multiplayer for up to four players, and bass, drum and vocal tracks alongside guitar.
- Killswitch/pitchbend (whammy) support from FoFiX 3.100, and more detailed settings for timing and display.
What vanilla still does better
- Simplicity: one small game, one folder, no theme or fork-version confusion.
- Historical accuracy: the exact 2008 client, which is what some preservation-minded players want.
- Lower setup risk on an old Windows system that already runs it.
The verdict
New players should start with FoFiX unless they specifically want the 2008 original. Players who want a maintained game with modern controllers and online play should skip both and read Frets on Fire vs Clone Hero.
