A wireless Xbox 360 guitar will not connect to a PC over Bluetooth. It needs Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows — a small USB dongle that pairs with Xbox 360 wireless controllers. Without it, the guitar is a very attractive paperweight.
What to buy
- Search for the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows (sponsored) — the official Microsoft receiver, not a generic Bluetooth dongle.
- Beware counterfeits: third-party receivers that look identical often have flaky drivers or fail to pair at all. If a receiver is suspiciously cheap and has no Microsoft branding, assume it is a clone.
- One receiver pairs with up to four wireless controllers, so a band setup needs only one — but every wireless guitar still needs its own batteries.
Set it up
- Plug the receiver into a direct USB port, install the Xbox 360 controller driver from Windows Update or Microsoft’s driver package, and press the sync button on both the receiver and the guitar.
- Confirm the guitar appears in Windows game-controller settings and its buttons respond, before launching Frets on Fire or Clone Hero.
- In the game, bind frets and strum from scratch — do not trust an old mapping.
If Windows never sees the guitar, the receiver or the guitar’s radio is the problem, not the game — see controller not detected. If you are buying a guitar from scratch, a wired guitar or a modern controller from best guitar controllers avoids the receiver question entirely.
