Frets on Fire’s real library is its custom songs. Every song is a folder, and the game only sees it when the folder layout is exactly right. This guide covers vanilla Frets on Fire and FoFiX; the layout is the same, only the songs folder location changes.
The song folder layout
- Windows (portable or installer):
[game folder]\data\songs\[song name]\. - Each song folder must contain
song.ini(title, artist and metadata),notes.mid(the chart) andguitar.ogg(the playable guitar audio). song.ogg(backing audio) and artwork such aslabel.pngare optional.
Add a song, step by step
- Extract the song archive and check that
notes.midandguitar.oggsit directly inside the song folder — not inside a second folder with the same name. - Rename the folder to something simple, with no special characters, and keep file names lowercase on Linux.
- Restart the game (or rescan, in FoFiX) and look for the song in the song list.
If the song does not appear
Work through songs not showing: the double-folder problem causes most cases, followed by a wrong file name (notes.mid, not notes.MIDI) and a missing guitar.ogg. This wiki does not host or link commercial song packs — only use charts you made, charts shared freely by their creators, or audio you have the right to use.
