Charting Songs with Editor on Fire (EOF)

Editor on Fire (EOF) is the community chart editor most Frets on Fire and Clone Hero charters use. It is free, and it produces the notes.mid file that Frets on Fire reads. Charting well takes patience: a good chart is timed to the music, not just notes dropped on a grid.

Set up a chart

  • Create a song folder with your audio as an Ogg Vorbis file, then open it in EOF and set the song’s tempo map by tapping along to the beat.
  • Place the beat markers first, then chart one difficulty at a time — start with Easy or Medium and build up.
  • Use the guitar audio track for the notes you chart; the backing mix belongs in song.ogg, not in the playable track.

Test before you share

  • Play the chart in Frets on Fire or FoFiX at full speed and at half speed, and fix any notes that feel early or late.
  • Check every difficulty you claim to support — an untested Expert chart with impossible chords helps nobody.
  • Fill in song.ini with the correct title and artist, and credit the original song and any chart source honestly.
