If a chord drops notes in Frets on Fire even though you pressed every key, you are probably hitting keyboard ghosting, not a game bug. Cheap and laptop keyboards route keys through a shared matrix, and some combinations physically cannot register together. The game’s own troubleshooting notes say the same thing: remap, or change hardware.
Test your keyboard first
- Open the key tester in the game’s settings and press the chord that fails — if the tester also misses a key, the keyboard is the limit.
- Try the failing chord on a different keyboard before changing any game settings.
- On a laptop, an external USB keyboard often fixes the problem immediately.
Remap before you buy
- In Settings, then Controls, move frets off the function row — for example, to number keys 1–5 — and test the chord again.
- Spread frets across the keyboard instead of clustering them, and keep strum on a key far from the frets.
- If a remap fixes it, you are done: no purchase needed.
When an NKRO keyboard is the answer
If no remap works, you need a keyboard with n-key rollover (NKRO), which registers every key independently. See best keyboards for Frets on Fire (sponsored links, prices checked 2026-10-24) for what to look for, and prefer wired keyboards for rhythm timing.
