Vanilla Frets on Fire is not still updated. Its last release, 1.3.110, came out on 2008-11-04, and Unreal Voodoo has not released a new version since. Any site claiming a “Frets on Fire 2024” or “2025” or “2026” version is mislabelling something else — usually FoFiX, Clone Hero, or an unofficial repackaging.
What is still alive
- FoFiX — latest stable 3.123 (2021-12-16), with 4.0 in development. See FoFiX 3.123 status.
- Clone Hero — actively maintained, free, and the de facto standard for PC rhythm play today.
- YARG — actively maintained, free, and focused on latency and presentation.
- The chart format —
song.ini/notes.mid/guitar.oggcharts made for Frets on Fire still work in its successors, which is why the old library has not died with the old game.
So should you still play Frets on Fire?
Yes, if you want the original game or you are preserving it — download 1.3.110 from the download page and follow the Windows 11 guide. If you want a game that is still being fixed and improved, play Clone Hero or YARG instead and keep Frets on Fire as history. That is the honest split, and this site is built around it.
