On Linux, start with the prebuilt binaries — do not try to install vanilla Frets on Fire with a modern Python 3 package set. Vanilla Frets on Fire and FoFiX are Python-2-era software, so the command that used to be copied around for Debian/Ubuntu (python3-pygame and friends) does not make them run.
Option 1: The prebuilt vanilla package
- Download FretsOnFire-1.3.110.tar.gz from SourceForge and extract it to a folder you own.
- Run the game from that folder and check that your system provides SDL and OpenGL libraries for 32-bit-era binaries if your distribution still ships them.
- If the binary will not run on a current distribution, do not force it — move to Option 2 or 3.
Option 2: FoFiX from source
FoFiX is the maintained fork for Linux players who want the Frets on Fire format. Community build guides build it in a Python 2 virtualenv from the FoFiX repository, then run it from that environment. Follow the FoFiX install guide and keep your songs in a separate folder so a rebuild never deletes them.
Option 3: Modern games that read the same charts
On a current Linux distribution, Clone Hero and YARG are usually the practical choice: they are maintained, they run on modern systems, and they read the same chart formats. See Frets on Fire vs Clone Hero before deciding.
