How to Install FoFiX and Add Themes

FoFiX (Frets on Fire X) is the fork of vanilla Frets on Fire 1.2.451 that adds themes, multiplayer, bass and drum tracks, and vocals. Its latest stable release is 3.123 (2021-12-16). It is distributed as its own game, not as a patch you drop into a vanilla folder.

Install FoFiX

  • Get FoFiX from the FoFiX repository and install it into its own folder, such as C:\Games\FoFiX\.
  • Do not extract FoFiX into your vanilla Frets on Fire folder — the two games share file names and will conflict.
  • Launch FoFiX.exe once before adding songs or themes, so it creates its own settings and folders.

Move your songs (without duplicating them)

  • Point FoFiX at your existing songs folder, or copy your songs into FoFiX’s data\songs\ folder — do not keep two edited copies.
  • Each song folder still needs song.ini, notes.mid and guitar.ogg; see how to add custom songs for the full layout.
  • If a song does not appear, check for the double-folder problem in songs not showing.

Add a theme

  • Download a theme made for your FoFiX version, extract it, and place its folder in FoFiX’s themes folder.
  • Select it in FoFiX’s options, restart the game, and check menus and the fretboard before playing a full song.
  • If FoFiX will not start after a theme change, remove the theme folder and restart — see FoFiX startup errors.
