Linux was a first-class platform for Frets on Fire at release, and the game’s SDL and Python stack made it a natural Linux title. In 2026 the picture is split: the old binaries exist, but current distributions have moved on from the Python 2 and 32-bit libraries they need.
Your three options, ranked by practicality
- Clone Hero or YARG — maintained, current Linux builds, same chart formats. This is what most Linux rhythm players actually run.
- FoFiX from source — build it in a Python 2 virtualenv from the FoFiX repository if you specifically want the Frets on Fire format and themes.
- Vanilla 1.3.110 tarball — SourceForge Linux package for older distributions or preservation setups; do not expect it to run cleanly on a current distro without library work.
For steps, see the Linux install guide. And do not follow old guides telling you to install python3-pygame to run this game — that does not work for a Python-2-era codebase.
