Windows 7 is the system vanilla Frets on Fire was built for, in spirit if not in date: a 2008 game on a 2009 operating system. If you still run Windows 7, vanilla Frets on Fire 1.3.110 is the most compatible version of the game you will find anywhere — with one large warning attached.
What works
- Vanilla 1.3.110 from SourceForge runs on Windows 7 without the compatibility wrestling Windows 11 needs.
- Keyboard play, custom songs and the original four-track experience work as designed.
- Old Guitar Hero controllers with Windows 7 drivers are more likely to work here than on Windows 11.
The warning
Windows 7 itself has not received security updates since January 2020. Running an old, unsigned 2008 game on an unpatched system connected to the internet is a security risk that has nothing to do with Frets on Fire. If this is a dedicated offline retro machine, that risk is contained; if it is your daily computer, upgrade the system and use Clone Hero or YARG instead. For install steps on supported systems, see Windows 10 install and Windows 11 install.
