Frets on Fire’s version numbers look confusing because the last three releases came close together and the game then stopped. Here is the short history that matters for downloading today. All three versions live in the project’s SourceForge archive.
The three versions
- 1.2.451 — the version FoFiX forked from. It fixed the hammer-on/pull-off (“tappable notes”) bugs introduced in 1.2.438 and added an option to disable them. Some players report it as the most comfortable fallback when later versions misbehave — that is a community report, not a developer verdict.
- 1.2.512 — a later vanilla release focused on bug fixes and performance, including support for importing songs from Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s.
- 1.3.110 (2008-11-04) — the last vanilla release, and the one this site recommends from the download page. It is the latest version, not a “new” version: nothing has been released since 2008.
Which one should you download?
Download 1.3.110 first. If it misbehaves on your system and you have already tried compatibility mode and a driver update, 1.2.451 is the version the community most often points to as a fallback — try it before concluding the game cannot run at all.
